Emerald Pool, the miracle at the heart of Krabi's forest

Krabi, one of Thailand’s top travel destinations and home of the world’s best beaches, also has many natural tourist attractions that await visitors to pay a visit. Among all the natural beauties in Krabi, Emerald Pool is one of the “Unseen” destinations that many Thais and foreigners would like to drop by.

Emerald Pool is located in “Khao Pra - Bang Kram Wildlife Sanctuary” at Khlong Thom district of Krabi province. The pool is originated from warm water stream in lowland of southern forest. Entrance fee for Thai is Baht 20 per person, but for foreign visitors, it is Baht 200 per person. Sorry guys but that the way it is in Thailand. The opening hour for the Emerald Pool is between 8:30 – 17:00, everyday.

You can choose to go to the Emerald Pool by either 1) through 1.4-Kilometer-long nature trail or 2) via 800-meter-long direct gravel path. If you are not in a hurry we would like to recommend you to do some exercise before jumping into the Emerald Pool by going through the nature trail since you can enjoy tropical rainforest and, if you are lucky, you might come across Gurney's Pitta, a very rare species of bird that used to extinct for 100 years; but watch your step, some part of the wooden bridge are slippery and rotten.

While walking down the nature trail, “Sra Kaew” or “The Glass Pool” is the spot that we would like you to take a closer look. Even though you cannot dive into Sra Kaew, but seeing fish swimming in a very big-clear-emerald-water pond is really amazing. It is very hard to stop ourselves from jumping in but “Khao Pra - Bang Kram Wildlife Sanctuary” strictly forbid every visitor to swim in Sra Kaew. They would like to preserve the beauty as it is.

Sra Morakot” or “The Emerald Pool” is only a short walk from Sra Kaew. The Emerald Pool is roughly 1.5 – 1.8 meters deep, 20 meters wide, and 25 meters long. We are short of thermometer at the time we were there, but by reading the sign, we know that heat from magma underneath the pool can heat up the water; 30 to 50 degree celsius. We also know that water in the Emerald Pool is full of calcium carbonate that makes all the suspended particles settle to the bottom as a result, water in the Emerald Pool is always clear.

Unlike Sra Kaew, visitors can take a very relaxing swim in the Emerald Pool but do not swallow the water. Although the water looks very clear and seems to be drinkable but we are highly recommend you not to try it. Since the water contains high calcium carbonate, which can easily cause kidney stone.

Unfortunately, there is no changing facility and toilet provided, so it is good idea to bring your own towels, shorts, and amenities.

When you continue walking down the wooden bridge 2 kilometers from the Emerald Pool, you can see “Bonam Phut” or “Blue Pool,” the spring fed turquiose water pond, which is the orgin of the Emerald Pool.

Many Thai people misunderstood that bubble from the spring-fed would come up if you clap your hands by the Blue Pool as if it dance to the sound of your hands. However, we can still see bubble raising up continuously without making any sound. You don’t want to make loud noise to disturb wild animals, do you?

There is more to Krabi than its beautiful beaches. Emerald pool is one of them.
