Jesada Technik Museum: Yesterday’s cars of tomorrow

The invention of the wheel allowed the creation of cars and other vehicles. The first car ever created was the Ford Model-T, which you could have in any color as long as it was in black. From there, man has continued to enhance the capabilities of the car as well as the design of them. In the 50’s, the jet age gave rise to more modern-looking and concept cars which were marketed as ‘cars of tomorrow’. Today however, such cars cease to exist yet the idea of what tomorrow’s car will look like still engages the imaginative mind. Take a ride down memory lane and visit yesterday’s cars of tomorrow at Jesada Technik Museum.

The museum was founded by Mr. Jesada Deshsakulrith, a Thai businessman who has a passion for automobiles and mechanics. His interest in these vehicles led him to tour antique car collections across Europe and the US, and eventually inspired him to collect antique and rare cars and vehicles to be put on display for adults to reminisce and kids to dream. The first car in his collection is the Messerschmitt KR-200 (Bubble Car; 1958) brought in from Switzerland. Not only does he collect rare cars, but he also studies them.

Currently, there are approximately 500 pieces in the museum’s collection which include land, air, and sea vehicles from around the world. Mr. Jesada had the museum built with the intention of educating Thais who share the same interest in vehicles and mechanics, as well as give them the opportunity to see the vehicles in real life rather than through images. To see these mechanical marvels of the 50’s and beyond, make your way to Nakhon Pathom province. The museum is open for all to see, free of charge.

The cars in the museum are a rare sight to see indeed. These antique automobiles have been refurbished but still contain their original parts. Visitors are allowed to touch the cars, and even sit inside some of them. Mr. Jesada tells us that he allows visitors to get a hands-on experience because it is nothing compared to the dreams and imagination that the children will have to take home with them. He recognizes that his museum is only a spark that will ignite young minds to create even better things for the future.

It is hard to say what the highlight of the museum is due to the variety of vintage vehicles that many have never even seen or heard of before. You will come across airplanes, helicopters, tanks, buses, sedans, motorcycles, tricycles, and bicycles from around the world. The largest collection of a single car however, is the Bubble Car that Mr. Jesada is very fond of. For those of you who are movie fans, don’t miss out the famous time travelling car that has taken us to the past and brought us back to the future three times; the ever-iconic DeLorean DMC-12.

    • Strong point:
    • The museum’s immense collection of vehicles is a rare sight to see. Visitors are allowed to touch and get inside some of the vehicles.
    • Weak point:
    • The airplane displays are out in the open which can get pretty hot during the afternoon, and not practical to visit if it rains.
    • Conclusion:
    • Spectacular display of vintage vehicles, most of which you’ve probably never seen or heard of before. Get up close and personal with the 500 vehicles including iconic cars such as the Bubble Car and the DeLorean DMC-12. Adults will surely reminisce and kids will get imaginative.
