Wat Sri Khun Muang, a gathering place for Thai's by the Mekong River

“Wat Sri Khun Muang or “Wat Yai, is one of many important religious sites to the locals that live in this area. The temple is situated on Chai Khong Rd., in between Sri Chiang Khan Soi 6 and 7. The temple was built in BE 2485. During religious festivals, the temple is crowded with townsfolk and visitors.

Once past the temple walls, you will come across the temple hall with a Lanna-style roof. Inside the temple hall, notice the paintings behind the Buddha image. The illustrations are part of a fable. If you look closely, you will find elements that are not of that era; a tuk-tuk for example, which suggests that some additions have been made to the mural over the years.

The Buddha image in the hall is made of wood and designed in Laotian style. The image has been ornamented with gold leaves.  Women who would like to pay homage are only allowed to bow down before the Buddha image.

Before you leave, make sure to take a look at the sides of the Buddha image. There you will find a conduit that looks like a swan barge. The front of the barge is the head of a serpent that has water flowing out of it. The water is used for blessing the Buddha, and only performed during ceremonies by the abbot or prefect.

Although the temple is not that big, it is well worth your time to visit.

    • Strong point:
    • The swan barge and mural are the highlights of this temple.
    • Weak point:
    • Noisy during Saturday and Sunday due to the weekend walking street.
    • Conclusion:
    • To enjoy Lanna and Laotian architechture and design fused together, visit Wat Sri Khun Muang.
