Wat Phrathat Chae Haeng
Wat Phra That Chae Haeng is a sacred sanctuary over 647 years old built on Sri Phu Piang hill in Phu Piang district Nan province. The chronicles of Nan retell the story Nan’s Ruler who built the sanctuary during his reign in BE 1869 – 1902.
He went as well to help “Phra Mahatumleethai” build Wat Luang Apai (known today as Wat Pa Mamuang). Upon completion, Phra Mahatumleethai offered 7 “Phra Mahashinnatat” statues, and 20 of each silver and gold “Phra Pim”. On his return, he placed them on Doi Phu Piang Chae Hang and built a pagoda around. Generations after, the sanctuary has been restored and expanded time and again.
There are many points of interest to see at this sanctuary. The pagoda, which has a bell-shape, stands 55.5 meters on a square pedestal 22.5 meters wide on each side. It is painted in gold that the Lanna people believe brings good luck to those of the rabbit year. If you are born in the year of the rabbit, praying there will bring you merit. You will see many rabbit figurines, of all sizes, nearby. In addition, the temple has laid a path around the Buddha image for those who would like to walk around with a lit candle.
To the side of the sanctuary you will find the main chapel. The chapel houses a Lanna style Buddha image posed in a sitting position. Around the back is another Buddha image whom many visitors come to pray to. The Buddha image got its name because it only takes a day to construct. Buddhists believe the statue has powers to bring you good luck immediately.
Outside the temple wall is a hidden sanctuary. Many visitors, Thai and foreign, don’t notice it much, but inside is a monastery with one of the most beautiful reclining Buddha in Thailand.
