Insect Park: Float like a butterfly, hide like a leaf

Insects!! Don’t panic, these aren’t the creepy crawlies that keep us awake late at night, or the harmful ones with lethal venom. Instead, these critters are the ones we love to look at and admire for their beauty; they’re butterflies. Take a tour inside the Insect Park to view colorful caterpillars, beautiful butterflies, and other inconspicuous insects hidden in the trees.

The Insect Park is within the compound ofKasetsart University Kamphaeng Saen Campus. The park was initially open for research on insect behavior in different habitats, as well as a breeding center for rare species of insects. The Insect park is divided into two sections; 1) the garden, and 2) the museum. The garden is an enormous metal-framed dome that takes up 1,600 square meters, and is covered by a net to allow a lot of sunlight and rain water to make the trees and plants in the garden grow.

During your visit, a researcher will be the one to give you a tour of the vicinity. The breeding center takes up most of the work performed by researchers. They gather the eggs for all the insects, and send them to the lab and incubator to hatch. Once fully grown, they are released in to the garden. Inside the garden is where the magic and beauty of nature is revealed. Aside from the kaleidoscopic patterns of butterflies fluttering everywhere, the park’s highlight also includes inconspicuous insects whose main ability is camouflage. These insects have to hide themselves because they are not as mobile as other insects. This defense mechanism helps them escape the eyes of predators. Are you good enough to spot the stick or leaf insect?

After your tour of the garden, you will arrive at the museum. The museum displays stuffed dragonflies, beetles, and butterflies. You will get the chance to see over 1,000 different species of butterfly, in all shapes and colors. The highlight of the butterfly collection is the extinct Thai sub-species of the Bhutan Glory Butterfly. Also in the museum, you will get the chance to be up close and personal with various larvae and colorful caterpillars.

Insect Park is an awesome attraction. Being able to view forest insects, especially butterflies, is a rare sight especially in the city. So if you have the chance, visit the Insect Park and museum to learn more about these beautiful creatures. Grown-ups will have as much fun as children here.
