Baan Satudom Museum Rayong: Antiques and Artifacts of Rayong’s past

Everything changes over time, there are no exceptions. Eventually, what was once new will become old and fade away into our memories. However, there are some who choose to preserve things so that they may be appreciated in the future and hopefully never forgotten from our memories. One such place that preserves antiques is Baan Satudom Museum in RayongThis museum is located on Yomchinda road, on the first road ever built in Rayong.

The museum is a wooden house built in 1920, over 90 years ago. It is named after the owner of the house, Pong Satudom. The house was once a movie theater, then a mill, and even a boatyard because of the Rayong River that flows behind the house. Townsfolk would use the river to get from place to place, up until modernity brought roads to the area. Since then, the river hasn’t been used as much, and the dynamic way-of-life that existed because of river is now gone. The museum showcases photographs and antiques which depict the way-of-life of the townsfolk who depended on the river.

There are two floors to the house. Both floors are open to the public, for those interested to come and take a look inside. The first floor is a display of daily household items such as kitchenware, telephones, a transistor radio, working tools, decorative items, and many more. One of the highlights of the museum is the photographs of the townsfolk of Rayong from back in the day. The collection of black and white photos hung on every wall is impressive. Some photos may even bring a smile to your face.

Once you’ve finished touring the first floor and the backyard, make your way to the second floor. Up here, you’ll get to see the simple décor of a bedroom furnished with a bed, a small wardrobe, a television, and more photographs. The bedroom is painted in white to make the room look clean and bright.

If you are fond of antiques, Baan Satudom Museum would be an interesting place for you to visit during your stay in Rayong. The collections presented here will make you reminisce of your childhood years. Such antiques like the typewriter, which has been replaced by the computer, will definitely remind you of the click clack sounds made every time the keys are punched. And for those who weren’t born in time to see such things, you’ll get the chance to see the objects and tools that your parents and ancestors used before technology advanced to today’s time.

    • Strong point:
    • Most of the objects on display are over 90 years old and in relatively good condition. There is plenty of things to see especially all the photographs
    • Weak point:
    • There isn’t anyone to give you more information about the objects on display.
    • Conclusion:

    How to get there

From Sukhumvit Rd., turn into Taksin Maharat Rd. (aka Nakornrayong 64) and drive for 500 meters before turning right into Yomchinda Rd. Continue straight and look for the museum to your left.
