Thapae Walking Street: The biggest walking street in Thailand

Ever been to Ratchadamnoen road on a Sunday evening? No, not the one in Bangkok, we’re talking about the one up north in Chiang Mai. On a Sunday evening as the sun begins to set, the entire road comes alive and turns into a walking street known as Thanon Khon Dern Chiang Mai(Chiang Mai Walking Street), or more locally known as Thanon Khon Dern Thapae (Thapae Walking Street).

During the week, the road is much like any other filled with cars driving by, until the weekend comes along and the roads are closed. This kilometer and a half stretch of road is the biggest walking street in Thailand. It begins at Thapae Gate and continues until Wat Phra Singh. The walking street has a lot to offer to both Thais and foreigners. Local handicrafts, hill tribe products, lamps, wood carvings, clothes, woven silk and fabrics, scarves, postcards, and various artworks are just some of the things you’ll get to see and buy. As for food, needless to say, the walking street will allow you to indulge in all sorts of snacks, desserts, local dishes, and beverages. Furthermore, the area will keep you entertained with live musical performances and dances from pros and amateurs alike.

Other than shopping and eating at the walking street, there are many temples in the area which you can visit as well. It’s your chance to view them at night instead of during the day for a change. Temples in the area include Wat Pan Tao, Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and more. In some of the temples, there are stalls set up on the temple grounds where you’ll find more goods and food for sale. If you’re muscles are giving out, stop by for a soothing Thai massage at any of the massage parlors along the way.

Due to the various attractions in this area, and the immense number of people that gather here every weekend, it’s no surprise that Thapae Walking Street has become a popular and somewhat iconic symbol of Chiang Mai. If you missed out on Wualai’s Saturday walking street, then make sure you come to Thapae’s Sunday walking street. This walking street is definitely the best way to end any busy week before Monday comes along.

    • Strong point:
    • So much to see, eat, and buy! You definitely won't go home empty handed or on an empty stomach. Thapae Walking Street is a really lively place to spend Sunday evening.
    • Weak point:
    • The walking street can get overly crowded since many people, Thai and foreigners, come here; expect some pushing or simply a standstill because people up front aren't moving.
    • Conclusion:
    • Due to the various attractions in this area, and the immense number of people that gather here every weekend, it’s no surprise that Thapae Walking Street has become a popular and somewhat iconic symbol of Chiang Mai. This walking street is definitely the best way to end any busy week before Monday comes along.
