Donwai Floating Market: If you live to eat.

One of Nakhon Pathom’s floating markets, Talad Nam Donwai – Donwai Floating Market, is known specifically for its good food and desserts. If you live to eat, then you may want to take a trip to this floating market.

The following restaurants and dessert shops are just a few of the popular places to eat during your trip. Listing everything out is nearly impossible since there is so much to see and eat. If you like duck, stop by at Ped Palo Nai Nub – Nai Nub Stewed Duck for lunch. This restaurant has been open long before the floating market became a tourist destination. On your plate of hot rice, you are given big chunks of soft and tender stewed duck. The dipping sauce that comes with it has a really sour taste mixed with spiciness. Another dish you can try is the duck stewed in pickled lemon; Ped Toon Manow Dong.

For dessert, you have to try Kanom Tarn – Palm-fruit Cake. However, you have to go and buy it fromKanom Tarn Pah Kai. This shop has been open for over four decades. The Palm-fruit Cakes have a 3-star OTOP (One Tambon One Product) rating, and sell so well that they are exported to the US and Australia. Notice the yellow puffs with (usually) shredded coconut on top; those are the palm-fruit cakes. Although palm-fruit cake is the specialty, the shop also makes other Thai sweets and desserts for you to buy back home.

If you interested in trying Chinese desserts, look forKanom Pia Boran Heng Kee Pai Kieow. Over at this shop, you will be able to select various deserts such as moon cakes, stuffed buns, and more. Just in case you didn’t know, these Chinese desserts aren’t all sweet.

Last shop we invite you to try is Mae Mali Bakery. This little bakery located near the entrance to the shrine sells crispy bread/toast similar to rusk. It may not seem like a dessert you would normally eat, but it is a great snack which many Thais enjoy. The toasts are made fresh every day. You can choose from four different flavors which include, milk, coffee, garlic, and chocolate. It may not sound like it, but garlic is a popular flavor.

Hopefully this small highlight will entice you to visit Donwai Floating Market, and taste the food and desserts here. Of course you will find much more than what we just mentioned. The food and desserts do not cost very much so you’ll definitely be able to keep your stomach full all day.

    Editor's Comment

    • Strong point:
    • The vendors are really friendly and will want you to have a taste. They won’t mind if you don’t buy anything. Food is not that expensive
    • Weak point:
    • Weekends and holidays attract a lot of people and the place is very crowded. Parking space is hard to find too.
    • Conclusion:
    • You’ll want to try out as many things as you can. The food and desserts do not cost very much so you’ll definitely be able to keep your stomach full all day.

    How to get there

Coming from Bangkok, take Pinklao – Nakorn Chaisri road and drive past the road that cuts with Phuttamonthon Sai 5 road, then keep left. Turn into Bang Toey Soi 2 and continue for another 7 kilometers. You will come across Wat Donwai (temple) to your right. Park inside.
