Wat Phra Singha: Home to one of Chiang Mai’s oldest Buddhas
If you’re on a mission to visit the temples of Chiang Mai, here’s one to look out for; Wat Phra Singha Voramahaviharn. Inside the temple, you will come across one of the town’s revered Buddha images called Phra Phut Sihing, as well as the Buddha image for those born of the Dragon year.
When the temple was built in 1345, it was originally called Wat Lee Chiang. However, because the locals called it Phra Phut Sihing, it eventually became Wat Phra Singha and has stayed that way since 1817. The ruler of Chiang Mai at the time had the temple built so that his remains could be kept. More buildings and structures were constructed in the years following his death.
Once past the gates into the temple compound, you will come across a statue of Basrivichai; a famous monk. Behind the statue is the temple hall withLuang Por Toh Buddha image. To the right of the hall is an impressive Lanna-styled tower. If you continue your walk to the back of the compound, you’ll come across Songsong Chapel (2 Diciplines Chapel) and Viharn Laikhum. Inside the Viharn is where you’ll find one of Chiang Mai’s oldest and most revered Buddha image, Phra Phut Sihing aka. Phra Singha. During Songkran Water Festival, the Buddha image is carried around town for people to douse with water for merit.
Another revered Buddha image that you will find nearby is Phra That Luang. This Buddha image is said to bring good luck to those born of the Dragon year. Sunday is the busiest day of the week to visit the temple since Tha Pae Walking Street is nearby. If your itinerary for the day includes visiting the walking street, stop by at the temple for a quick visit.
