Maleewanich Pillow Shop: Handmade pillows to help you sleep

The industrial revolution led to a new form of manufacturing goods which replaced human skill with machinery. While this revolution greatly improved efficiency and cost, it took away a valuable aspect of manufacturing; the personal touch. It is for this reason that Maleewanich Pillow Shoprefuses to keep up with the times, and continues to make handmade products.

Although Mrs. Maleewanich is still around, old age has caught up and she no longer takes part in the manufacturing process. Instead, she watches over and meticulously inspects the work in process. Her son, Pisawong is now the head and runs the family business.

Located on Yomchinda road, this little business inside one of the many wood houses along the street has been around for decades. Notice the blue shop sign or the cabinet of pillows inside the shop; that’s the one. Look inside the 2-story house and you’ll see that it has a huge hole in the center. The hole on the second floor is a typical aspect of the manufacturing process back in the day. It allows materials to be hoisted up and lowered down without requiring anyone to actually go up and down.

The shop manufactures handmade goods that include pillows, bolsters of different sizes, pillow cases, and mattresses 3ft to 6ft in size. Their products are really soft and comfortable to hold because they are stuffed with cotton. Furthermore, the products can be washed in various ways, and have a long useful life due to its durability.
A lot of the customers who buy their products are in fact repeat customers. Mr. Pisawong explains that the shop’s customers are very loyal, and prefer to buy pillows that are handmade instead of machine made in factories. In addition, he also says that some of his customers would come from far away just to buy their products, and that many now have children who also come to buy their products as well.

If you would like a pillow, pillow case, or just curious as to how they manufacture their pillows and products, come to Maleewanich Pillow Shop, and maybe you’ll learn a thing or two.

    • Strong point:
    • The shop, which has been open for decades, manufactures products that are meticulously handmade. Their products are soft, comfortable, and durable.
    • Weak point:
    • The interior and exterior of the shop looks plain and uninteresting. If you didn’t know that it was a pillow manufacturing shop, you’d walk right by it.
    • Conclusion:
    • If you would like a pillow, pillow case, or just curious as to how they manufacture their pillows and products, come to Maleewanich Pillow Shop, and maybe you’ll learn a thing or two.

    How to get there

From Sukhumvit Rd., turn into Taksin Maharat Rd. (aka Nakornrayong 64) and drive for 500 meters before turning right into Yomchinda Rd. The shop is to your left, in between Papradoo road and Srisamutphok road.
