Phra Phuttabaht Phu Kwai Ngern, A Religious Relic of Loei

“Phra Phuttabaht Phu Kwai Ngern” is a sacred historical Buddhist site in Chiang Khan district in Loei province. Story has it that it is impossible to get to the temple if you do not deserve it; even if you are ready to go there. In other words, only those with merit may find the temple and enter.

Nowadays however, it is fairly easy to get there. Travel along the Chiang Khan – Pak Chom road for about 6 km. When you get to Pah Ban village, keep following the road and enter Baan Umong for another 3 km, once at the foot of the mountain, you have another kilometer to go.

The temple was built in BE 2300 on a mountain 400 meters above sea level.

The footprint of the lord Buddha is one of the many interesting sights to see in this temple. The stone tablet however, has a 1foot crack, and is without any inscriptions. The temple became a historic site on the 8th of March BE 2478. Not only that, the temple is home to “Phut Chaphanrungsri” a gigantic white statue with small mirrors fused into it. Last is the cement statue of the water buffalo this temple is named after, which can be found in the parking lot.

You cant say that you’ve been to Chiang Khan if you haven’t gone to this temple.

    • Strong point:
    • The footprint of the lord Buddha is one of the many interesting sights to see in this temple. Situated on a mountain, the temple also offers great views of the surrounding area.
    • Weak point:
    • Although the road up the mountain is laid with asphalt, drivers are asked to be prudent behind the wheel. Expect steep slopes and curves. As you drive higher, fewer tall trees can be found thus less shade. It can get pretty heated up and harder to breath.
    • Conclusion:
    • The ride to the temple makes you understand why you have to ‘deserve’ to get into the mountain. Once there, you are amazed by the scenery; looking out from a temple on a mountain. The relics in the temple are interesting items to see as well; a buddha and a footprint.
